I Dream A World, Langston Hughes
I dream a world where man
No other man will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn
I dream a world where all
Will know sweet freedom's way,
Where greed no longer saps the soul
Nor avarice blights our day.
A world I dream where black or white,
Whatever race you be,
Will share the bounties of the earth
And every man is free,
Where wretchedness will hang its head
And joy, like a pearl,
Attends the needs of all mankind-
Of such I dream, my world!
James Langston Hughes [1902-1967] was born in Joplin, Missouri, USA, the great-great-grandson of Charles Henry Langston (brother of John Mercer Langston, the first Black American to be elected to public office). He attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he began writing poetry in the eighth grade. His father would discourage him from pursuing writing as a career, in favour of something 'more practical'. Langston's tuition fees to Columbia University were paid on the grounds that he study engineering.
いろいろリサーチをしていたら、こんなかわいいGoogle Doodle に出くわしました。Google Doodle とは、記念日をグーグルのサイトがイラストレーターとコラボして出来たアニメの動画で、ラングストン・ヒューズ という、ニューヨークのハーレムルネッサンスに貢献した詩人の詩を知るきっかけになりました。 とてもいい詩なので紹介したいと思いました。BGMも当時のジャズが流れていて、優雅でアーティスティックな雰囲気で素敵でした。 不公平な世の中、差別にあってきた黒人の方たちにとってはつらい過去、現在なのですが、自由になりたい、平和になりたいという希望を、このような心に響くポエムにする、という手もあるのですね。
