Right before I left

Hello!  

I finally got back to Japan!  But I'm suffering from jet lag now lol😂!  Anyway, today, I'd like to write about right before I left the US.

As some of you might know, I have been sick this past few weeks and I still can't get rid of coughs completely.  To be honest, I'm still not at my best. Yet, we had guests from LA over the weekend and we kind of had to take care of them.  That is because the guests were my in-laws!  So first thing we did was to book a room for them at Pebble Beach Resorts where I work at.  This was a belated birthday and a thank you gift for my mother-in-law since she treated us to a Caribbean cruise back in September.

We got a nice room for them!  At Pebble Beach Resorts, we have 3 divisions of hotel rooms. The main one is called Lodge and it's at the heart of Pebble Beach Company.  The second one Casa Palmero is located east of Lodge, about a 5 minute walk from there. It is known as the most luxurious and elegant Mediterranean-style estate in PB.  The last one is Spanish Bay Inn and is located a little away from the main Lodge, about 15 minutes away by car.  This is the most affordable for us so we booked here but still, the room was boujee to me.

 

In the meantime, I still had to get ready for my Japan trip that was coming up and I felt like I was running out of time.  

Regardless, I was able to find time to hang out and enjoy the family time.  My husband took us to his boss's restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea.  His boss owns a nice Mexican restaurant there called Cultura.  This is the first one for him to own, and the one my hubby works at in downtown Monterey is his second invested restaurant business.  That night, his boss's wife Sarah was there serving us foods!  

I realized I only took dessert pictures! 

And these guys in the picture above are Chorrus and the chocolate syrup.  You're supposed to squeeze the grilled orange into the chocolate syrup to enhance the flavor.  How different that is!  I love creative food!  

This right here is Mexican hot chocolate.  The whole ambiance was modern and artsy.  The wifey boss Sarah loves Oaxaca's arts and she decors the place with a whole lot of Oaxacan paintings and art pieces.  It's unique and beautiful.  I really liked it and we enjoyed the vibe.  

So this was our family reunion extravaganza.  We, except for my husband who had to work, left Monterey the next day for LA.  Since I was flying out of LAX, I asked them if I could get a ride and stay with them.  I was lucky enough to get it.

In LA, I revisited my old hangout place.  I used to work at this place on Lake Ave and I walked around to see what was new and not.  I went into this restaurant called Real Food Daily where they served Vegan food.  I came here once when they just opened.  It was about 7 years ago or so if I remember correctly, back when there weren't a lot of vegan places.  I didn't think they were as good at that time so I never came back until I saw that again this time.  I thought, well it's been a while and since I was feeling a nostalgia, why don't I give it a second chance?  So I went in.  

These are what I ordered. 

This is the ginger shot.  It's pure ginger. I got this because it's good for your immunity and it is anti-inflammatory and being still kind of sick, I needed to boost myself up.  There's burn to it but it's a good burn. 

And I loved this!  I ordered ”Almond Tuna Melt”.  As you can guess, it is made of Almond, not Tuna.  But it does taste like Tuna!  Let's look at what they have here.   Pepper jack cheese, tomato, chipotle aioli, sourdough bread.  Of course, the pepper jack cheese is not real.  It tastes like it but is not the real one.  In one word, TASTY!  Now, this experience changed my mind.  I don't know if they improved their food here or not but I was a happy camper when I left.  I highly recommend this place if any of you get a chance to visit the city of Pasadena.

So, these are what I did right before I left.  It was hectic but I was at least able to enjoy myself.  I'm not gonna lie, it's good to go back to where you used to live and hang out.  I should do it whenever I can.

[トリビア] こういう表現はアメリカ英語(口語)でよく使われ、オバマ大統領もよくこの手の口語表現を使っていたので厳しい報道陣は批判していた。

…back in September のback は過去を指す。back in summer 去年の夏。　文脈の感じで１つ前の過去になるが、back then (当時、あの頃)、back in the days (昔、若い頃) など少し離れた過去を示すこともある。

And these guys in the picture above   上の写真に写っているこれらは。　these guys は口語的な言い方。写真に写っているのはデザートなので人物ではないが、人を指す guys を使うことでユーモアあふれた表現の仕方。

you‘re supposed to で〜するはず、するものだ、するべきだ、と、いかにもそうするのが当たり前な表現をしたいときに使う。You’re supposed to go to school.  学校に行くべきなんだけど。 You're supposed to take the pill after a meal.  その錠剤、食事の後に飲むものなんだけど。　You're supposed to tell me before you decide.  決める前に私に教えるってことになってるでしょ。

So this was our family reunion extravaganza.        そう、これが私達の贅沢な家族の集まり会だったんです。

Since I was flying out of LAX,              ロサンジェルス空港から出発するので。　sinceは〜ので、だから。because と同じ使い方をする。　fly out of で〜空港から出発する、という意味。　depart from〜　でもいいが、会話ではよく　fly out of〜を使う人が多い。

 I didn't think they were as good　　あまり美味しいと思わなかった。　I didn't think と最初に打ち消しているので　as good があまりそれほどでもない、と訳される。　ここでは食べ物のことを言っているので good を “美味しい”　と訳できる。not as good で、あまり美味しくない。　The show was not as good.  このショーはあまり良くなかった(おもしろくなかった)。

Chipotle aioli                                         チポトレ・アイオリ。チポトレはメキシコ料理によく使われる香辛料。アイオリはニンニクとオリーブ油で作られたマヨネーズのようなソース。地中海、フランス、スペイン、イタリア料理で使われる

Sourdough bread                                  サワードー。酸味のあるパン

It tastes like it but is not the real one     味は似てるけど本物ではない

I highly recommend this place               ここの場所、かなりオススメです。　Highly recommend がセットでよく使われる

[トリビア] ハリウッドスターが意外と住んでいるナイスな町。メリル・ストリープ、デンゼル・ワシントン、アンディー・ガーシア、アダム・サンドラーを見かけた、という声をちらほら聞く。映画“La La Land” で出てきた映画館がある町。きれいな住宅地なのでよくTVドラマや映画のシーン (ロケ地) として撮影班や撮影トレーラー (車) をよく見かることができる
